Will Mega Mix do it again? Digicel offers Double Top Up on Opening Night!
Tuesday, 10 May 2011 – Road Town, Tortola: Basketball fans are gearing up for mega excitement once again as the Annual National Basketball League gets off to an electrifying start this weekend with an island-wide motorcade on Friday 13 May and the official start of the games on Saturday 14 May.
President of the BVI Basketball Federation Byron Hodge and Vice President Roy Garraway on Tuesday unveiled detailed plans for this year’s tournament, which will pay tribute to past National Team player Kenny “Funny” Thomas.
“We are pleased to continue the tradition of naming the league in honour of local players who have made notable contributions to basketball over the years,” Garraway said. “Kenny has represented the BVI at many local and regional tournaments and we have invited him to accept this recognition this year and he has accepted.”
Eleven senior teams and eight junior teams will take part in the 2011 Kenny “Funny” Thomas Basketball League. They will be represented during Friday’s motorcade, which starts at 2pm from the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex through Road Town to Cane Garden Bay over the Ridge Road to Beef Island and back to Road Town via the coast, ending at the Digicel Flagship Store at 4pm.
The teams and the Digi Girls will also be out in full force the following day for a march past starting at 3pm at the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports near the Wickham’s Cay round-a-bout, proceeding along James Walter Francis Drive, around the traffic lights and to the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex. There, the Federation will present awards from last year’s tournament. During the ceremony, Minister of Sports Honourable Andrew Fahie, Representative for District 5 Hon. Elvis Harrigan and an official from sponsors Digicel are expected to make remarks.
The first games on the opening night will see top teams Young Guns come up against All Ah We; an Over 40’s game - Disciples from Tortola and Gunners from St. Thomas, USVI; and the big match - 2010 champions Mega Mix versus East.
“Digicel is sponsoring the National Basketball League for the second consecutive year and we are working with the Basketball federation to ensure that this year’s league brings the high level of excitement associated with this well loved sport,” stated Digicel BVI CEO Alan Bates. “We continue to give back to the community by supporting sporting, cultural and educational activities and we encourage everyone to support the Basketball Federation with your attendance at these games and see whether Mega Mix can retain their 2010 championship title.”
Bates also announced that on Saturday at the games, every customer who tops up $10 or more will get DOUBLE Credit! The Digi Girls will also be out at other major games with special offers for those who attend.
