“Digicel is extremely delighted to have reached this milestone, our one year anniversary in the British Virgin Islands,” stated CEO Alan Bates. “We could only have done this with the support of the government and people of this territory and this is our way of expressing our sincere gratitude. We encourage everyone to participate fully in this promotion and have a Bigger, Better Christmas with Digicel.”

In reflecting on the past year, Mr. Bates said since Digicel was launched in BVI in November 2008, residents have truly benefited from market liberalization with subscribers getting better calling plans, better value rates, a wider range of handsets, better customer care and better network coverage. He said Digicel continues to work on enhancing its products and services and subscribers can look forward to greater benefits in the coming months. One new service recently introduced is the Internet using Edge Modems.

Some of the promotions introduced over the year include:

  • Free Weekends (Top Up $10 Monday to Friday and get all Digicel to Digicel local calls free all weekend);
  • Unlimited International (Unlimited access to email and web browsing on BlackBerry, unlimited calls to any local mobile or landline and unlimited international calls to the USVI, Puerto Rico, USA, Canada and to fixed lines in the UK for $115 per month);

The CEO added that in the past year, Digicel also has become an exemplary corporate citizen in the BVI and is proud to have supported numerous sporting and cultural and community events in the territory. Digicel has entered into long term partnerships with the BVI Cricket Association, BVI Football Association, Kids And The Sea KATS, Special Olympics BVI, the Road Town Festival Committee and the East End/Long Look Festival Committee. In addition, several other church groups and community organizations on Tortola, Anegada and Virgin Gorda have benefitted from the company’s generosity.

Mr. Bates also recognized the contribution of Digicel’s endorsees – athlete Tahesia Harrigan and entertainers Ouida Nisbett and Alvin “DJ Turbo” Dore.
