DIGICEL SPONSORED ATHLETE QUALIFIES FOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AND LONDON OLYMPIC GAMES
May 16th 2011 - Star BVI Sprinter qualifies for London OlympicsMAY 16—Digicel sponsored Sprinter Tahesia Harrigan-Scott joined Chantel Malone as the British Virgin Islands’ second IAAF World Outdoor Championships qualifier on Sunday, then became the first to qualify for the London 2012 Olympic Games, when she placed second in the 100 meters in Belem, to kick off her Brazilian tour.
Harrigan-Scott—who will run in Uberlandia on Wednesday—had a time of 11.33 seconds in her 100m season opener, to finish behind Nigeria’s Osayemi Oludamola’s 11.31.
She is coming off placing fourth in pouring rain in Guadeloupe last weekend, when she ran 23.82 in the 200m.
With Harrigan-Scott, sponsored by Digicel, and Malone—both reigning Sol BVI Female Sr. and Jr. Athletes of the Year qualifying for the August 27-Sept 4 IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, it marks the first time in the territory’s history that two athletes had made the qualifying standard for the event. Malone’s leap of 6.65 meters (21’10”) earlier this year, qualified her for the championships.
Qualifying for the London 2012 Olympic Games began on May 1 and runs through July 8, 2012. The track and field segment of the Olympic Games will be held Aug 3-11, 2012.
