Caribbean Company Joins in Encouraging Public Support of the Games
Friday, 9 October 2009 – Road Town, Tortola: For the second year running, Digicel has come out in support of the Lions Club of Tortola as it prepares to host its annual Special Needs Games.
During a press conference held at the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports on Thursday, Lion President Ronald Smith Berkley, Project Chairman Emerson Jones and Fundraising Chairman Marvin Grant reiterated the club’s commitment to staging these games on an annual basis. The games, which began on Virgin Gorda seven years ago, will see special needs children and adults participate in a number of fun activities planned for the day, including athletics, football and bocce.
The Lions officials encouraged everyone to come out and show their full support to the participants.
The games are being held in conjunction with the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Parents and Caregivers of Children with Special Needs and the newly established Special Olympics BVI and with the support of several sponsors, including Digicel BVI and FirstBank Virgin Islands.
Digicel’s Marketing Executive Angela Burns said Digicel was pleased to come on board once again to support the Lions Club in this initiative. She said this is a sponsorship that Digicel is very proud of because the company recognizes the importance of integrating persons with special needs into the society and is committed to doing its part to make this happen.
“As we did last year, our staff will come out to the games on Saturday and serve as volunteers where needed, we also now present this cheque in the amount of $1500 to the Lions Club to go towards the event and we will be presenting each of the 50 plus participants in the games with Digicel bags filled with promotional items such as red caps, water bottles, lanyards and bandanas etc,” Burns added.
The 7th Annual Lions Club of Tortola Special Needs Games will be held at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds in Road Town tomorrow Saturday October 10th, 2009 starting at 10am.
