FROM HAITI’S ASHES

January 9th 2012 - JTV To Air Haiti Reconstruction Documentary On January 12

Monday January 9th, 2012 – Road Town, Tortola: JTV Channel 55 will air a one-hour documentary this Thursday at 7pm chronicling the rebuilding process in Haiti following the devastating earthquake two years ago.

The 7.0 earthquake, which struck on January 12th, 2010, claimed over 300,000 lives and left over one million homeless. Reports say an estimated half a million Haitians are still living in tent camps in and around the capital Port-au-Prince and cholera epidemics continue to threaten the country.

After the earthquake, the BBC commissioned a television documentary to follow the progress of a project which the Chairman of Digicel, Denis O’Brien had undertaken - the rebuilding of The Iron Market, an historic traders market in the downtown area which had collapsed during the disaster.

The resulting programme, “From Haiti’s Ashes”, aired on BBC2 last year and will premier in the British Virgin Islands on Thursday January 12th, 2012, the second anniversary of the Haitian Earthquake. JTV will repeat the documentary at 10:30pm the same day.

Immediately after the programme, a 30 second charity appeal will be aired for The Haven Partnership, whereby viewers can text a pledge to shortcode 5151. All revenues generated will be donated to The Haven Partnership, a charity established by Digicel’s Vice Chairman Leslie Buckley, that had already been working in Haiti building homes for people who did not have adequate shelter even before the earthquake struck. The Partnership will in turn use the funds to support their endeavours in Haiti.

“It is important to explain that this is a charitable endeavour,” stated Digicel BVI’s CEO Alan Bates. “It is not a Digicel project, but rather a Digicel supported project, undertaken for the benefit of The Haven Partnership and its various projects in Haiti. We encourage everyone to watch this moving documentary on JTV Channel 55 this Thursday and give generously to assist in this effort.”
