MEGA MIX WINS WILBERT "SHABUNDA" FAHIE 2010 BASKETBALL LEAGUE, POWERED BY DIGICEL
September 6th 2010 - Digicel sponsored basketball finalsMonday, 6 September 2010 – Road Town, Tortola: Crowd favourites Mega Mix convincingly defeated last year’s champions East in a nail-biting and extremely exciting game at the Multi-purpose Sports Complex in Road Town on Saturday, as the Wilbert “Shabunda” Fahie 2010 Basketball League powered by Digicel came to an end.
Hundreds of fans loyal to both sides came out to cheer on their players in the night cap that determined which team would win the championship and have bragging rights for the next year. The Mega Mix fans were not disappointed, as their team romped home to victory – 120 to 83 over three-peat champions East.
Sponsors Digicel presented the Most Valuable Player MVP of the championship game Kelvin Samuel of Mega Mix with a BlackBerry Curve 8520 in appreciation of his sportsmanship and contribution to the game. Samuel top scored with 46 points, had 19 rebounds, 2 blocks, 4 steal and 3 assists.
For team Mega Mix, Halstead Chiverton also put on a great performance, scoring 34 points, with 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists; and so too did William Leonard – 17 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists and Douron Phillip – 12 points, 14 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals and 4 assists. For East, the top scorers were David Lettsome – 29, Jahmal Rabsatt – 12, Eustace Freeman – 11 and Dameon Ottley – 10.
In the first game of the evening, Da Boyz proved too much for Redder than Red and emerged winners of the Intermediate Division. Redder than Red went under to Da Boyz 76-82. Top scorers for Da Boyz were Deon Smith – 21, Nichols Charles – 17, Shomari Morgan – 15 and Kenrick Thomas Jr. – 12. The top scorers for Redder than Red were Reynaldo Smith – 20, Sean Woods – 19, Travis Malone – 15 and Delon Mills – 11.
And in the Junior Division, Young Gunners swept the series, finally defeating Another Level 93-68 on Sunday August 29th. Jevon Serrant led the scoring for Young Gunners with 23 points, followed by Shamal Caines on 22, Jamal Serrant 15 and Tavon Phillip 10.
The Wilbert “Shabunda” Fahie 2010 Basketball League powered by Digicel got underway on Saturday May 8th featuring 26 teams. The playoffs began August 13th with 14 teams.
The BVI Basketball federation will hold the awards ceremony for the 2010 league at the beginning of next league next May.
