Digicel BVI supports national football team
ROAD TOWN, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS – 22 SEPTEMBER, 2008: Digicel BVI is rallying behind the BVI National Football Team as it competes this week in the 2008 Digicel Caribbean Championships.
The team left here for St. Kitts on Monday and will come up against the home team on Wednesday September 24th and Barbados on Friday September 26th.
Through collaboration with the BVI Football Association, Digicel BVI outfitted the team with 28 polo shirts branded with the Digicel and FA logos, back packs and other Digicel paraphernalia. Members of the management team were also provided with five handsets with US$100 credit each to allow them to keep in touch with family and friends back in the BVI.
Previously known as the Digicel Caribbean Cup, the newly named Digicel Caribbean Championships kicked off in Curacao on July 27th with the Netherlands Antilles, Grenada and Dominica making up Group A. The tournament will run over a five-month period, culminating in what is sure to be another exciting final in Jamaica in December.
BVI, St. Kitts and Barbados make up Group D and will be battling to qualify for the later stages of the competition. BVIFA Treasurer, Martin Cooke, feels that Avondale Williams, former national captain and now head coach, has found a special blend of youth and experience and could cause an upset in St Kitts.
Digicel announced its initial four year sponsorship of the Digicel Caribbean Cup in May 2004 and in June 2007, extended its contract until 2011. Digicel is committed to supporting the development of football across the region through its various initiatives such as sponsorship of 14 Football Federations and Football Associations; Digicel Kickstart Football Clinics and Digicel International matches, to name but a few.
